Mojang Studios has put its foot down when it comes to blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), according to a blog post published on Wednesday. Mojang is well known for producing the best-selling game of all time Minecraft, a three-dimensional (3D) sandbox game that has no intended goals.

To date, Mojang has sold 238 million copies of Minecraft and no other video game has sold more copies. Minecraft's sales are followed by top sellers like Grand Theft Auto V (165M copies), Tetris (100M copies), and Wii Sports (82.9M copies).

On Wednesday, the blog post stated that Minecraft would not use blockchain technology or NFTs. Minecraft creators strongly believe that all players should have access "everyone" to the same functionality and content.

NFTs could be used against the company's ethos because they can "create models [of scarcity] and exclusion that conflict [with [the company] guidelines," and NFTs "may not be reliable" and have been "sold for artificially or fraudulently inflated price."

"As such blockchain technologies are prohibited from being integrated into our Minecraft clients and server applications nor may it be used to create NFTs associ with any in game content, including worlds. Skins. Persona items. Or other mods," Mojang explains. The Stockholm-based videogame developer added:

We will also closely monitor the evolution of blockchain technology over time to see if it allows for more secure experiences and other practical and inclusive gaming applications. We don't plan to integrate blockchain technology into Minecraft.

Mojang's decision is made at a time Ubisoft and Square Enix have all launched NFT implementations in some way. Ubisoft, GSC Game World and Square Enix faced backlash at the end of 2021 over NFT inclusion.

The flak the companies got was so bad, GSC Game World decided to stop the production of the NFT elements planned for the game Stalker 2. However, an executive at Ubisoft, Nicolas Pouard, told the press that he thinks players reject NFTs because they don't understand the benefits of the technology.

Konami explained in February that it intended to continue issuing NFTs, to protect the company’s content. Square Enix also participated in a $35million investment round for Zebedee, a fintech and bitcoin payment processor. Zebedee, a New Jersey company, specializes in integrating Bitcoin payments into gaming.

Mojang wants nothing to do with blockchain or NFTs as it wants to be an all-inclusive game. SERVERS Mojang stated Wednesday that NFTs and speculative pricing distract from the game and encourage profiteering. This is contrary to the long-term joy of our players.
