Microsoft is expanding its world of Minecraft into a new action-adventure game, Minecraft Legends. The title, which is coming in 2023, asks players to explore the Minecraft world as it's being invaded by an evil force.

Mojang studios, Microsoft's Minecraft developer, described the new Minecraft game as a "familiar but in-many-ways new" experience that is more focused on strategy than battle. The original Minecraft game, which was first released in 2011, requires players to build and explore as well as fighting off zombie-like creatures.

Microsoft announced that you are the center of any battle you lead, fighting alongside allies and giving them direction," in a teaser announcement. Microsoft said it collaborated with Blackbird Interactive, which also developed the upcoming space strategy game Homeworld 3.

Minecraft Legends isn't guaranteed success just because it comes from a well-known title. Minecraft is one of the most beloved video games ever made. It ranks alongside Super Mario Bros., Grand Theft Auto, and Tetris. But its efforts to expand past that hit formula have been spotty.

According to Metacritic, Minecraft Dungeons was an action-adventure video game that was inspired by Minecraft. It received mixed reviews two years ago. GameSpot, another CNET corporate cousin said the game received a "good review". However, GameSpot pointed out that Minecraft Dungeons had a tendency to focus on fighting monsters and not offering a new approach to world building, which was the biggest disappointment. GameSpot's Steve Watts noted that the game "rather than shifting our expectations of games, it's banking upon its own popularity." Games

Microsoft unveiled Minecraft Legends during its annual summer videogame showcase, which will be held online this year. The game will be released next year for Xbox, PC, cloud gaming and cloud gaming.
