SIM lock:

A SIMLOCK, Network Lock, Carrier-Lock, imei lock or (Master) SUBSIDY lock is really a technical constraint built into GSM and CDMA cellphones by manufacturers for use by carriers to restrict the usage of these phones to specific countries and/or networks. This is in contrast to a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) which doesn't enforce any SIM limitations.

Unlocking Technology:

A device can be unlocked simply by entering a code supplied by the service operator. Alternative mechanisms include software operating on the device or a pc attached to the device, hardware devices that connect to the handset or over-the-air by the carrier. Most of the time the unlock process is permanent. The code required to remove all locks from a phone is called the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. If the handset is carrier locked it will generally show one of these messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Device companies have financial incentives both to bolster SIM lock protection (which placates mobile phone network companies and permits exclusivity discounts) as well as to weaken it (extending a handset's allure to users that aren't interested in the provider that offers it). Also, making it too tough to unlock a device could make it less attractive to network service providers who've a legal duty to offer unlock codes for some devices or in certain countries.

Unlocking Services:

Plenty of organizations offer a online cell phone unlocking service . This service requires those people that would like to unlock a mobile phone to give their IMEI number to a service supplier and quite often they will also ask for the country and service provider the device is locked to, often sent by email or submitted on their web site. The company then will supply (once you have paid) the unlock code for the mobile phone handset. For some manufacturers such as Nokia and Samsung a variety of services also provide special remote-unlocking software with instructions, when a cable is required to remove the SIM lock from home. Such organizations may email the unlocking code or software which will remotely unlock the device. The price for unlocking a mobile phone will vary based upon the mobile phone network it is locked to and the phone model itself, as each unlock code is unique to each unique handset.
